Getting to Azerbaijan by Railway:

Azerbaijan railway system is evolving. The railway system connecting to neighbouring countries is getting modernised day by day. Finally, completed in 2017 Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway perfectly connects Azerbaijan and Georgia to Turkish and European railway networks. The direct links are available to numerous destinations in CIS via Makhachkala and Derbend.

Timetable information for all trains can be found on the website of Azerbaijan Railways (Azeri/Russian only). Timetables for trains to Russia are also available in English at Tutu and Rzd.

Fortunately, domestic and international train tickets can be booked online through the online booking site of Azerbaijan Railways. One can buy maximum 4 tickets. Payments by major electron cards like Visa and Mastercard is accepted. Online sales usually starts 10 days earlier the departure and stops 3 hours prior to departure. Most importantly, after the online payment, the received order confirmation IS NOT a ticket yet! You still need to collect your train ticket at train station before getting on the train. You have to have your passport printed order confirmation with you.

Getting to Azerbaijan by Road

Azerbaijan’s transport infrastructure has enjoyed massive investment in recent years. The country is connected to Russia, Iran and Georgia. The Nakhchivan exclave has direct road links to Turkey with regular bus services all the way to Istanbul. Furthermore, the secondary ‘northern route from Baku to Tbilisi offers an easy, way of driving between the Azerbaijani and Georgian capitals via the historic cities of Shamakhi and Sheki.
